Designing Your Home: Windows 101
Our last “Designing Your Home” post was about kitchen countertops. Today’s post is about windows! Although not as exciting and aesthetically pleasing as kitchen countertops, windows are a key part of your home’s insulation and design. In fact, the wrong windows could mesh with the style of your home, so you want to pick right the first time before having to go through the trouble of replacing them. You should also be aware of which ones save you energy and keep your home warm.
What should you keep in mind?
Style: The good news is that since you are designing a new custom home, the sky is the limit! You don’t have to abide by specific rules on what windows you can use. We do suggest that you choose the style of your home first and then your windows. There are certain architectural styles like craftsman that will look better with only certain windows. But aside from certain home styles you can choose from many windows styles:
- Double Hung: One of the most common windows, they slide up and down and are easy to clean.
- Awning: These open outward and can be installed below or above other windows.
- Picture: Perfect for allowing large amounts of natural light in.
- Slider: Easy to use, just slide them side to side.
- Bay or Bow: Big and beautiful and provide you with more interior space!
And so many more styles to choose from.
Performance: How will your windows perform? You will notice the performance on your energy bill. The best windows are energy-efficient and made with low-e glass which reflect the heat back to the source. You should also consider windows that have some sound proofing, especially if you live in the city. And if you want to add to your home’s security, think about shatter-proof windows.
Frame: What kind of material will the glass go into? Vinyl, wood, aluminum, etc. Just like the styles, there are several options for the frame. And it depends on what you are looking for and your budget. Wood framing is usually the best choice for insulation but all of these materials have its pros and cons.
